Dorchester suffered a near collapse while considering A Fine Likeness and who's to say the next publisher I submit to won't do the same?
Also, I intend to publish a Civil War horror novel every year of the Sesquicentennial. Even if I could find a publisher to play along (not going to happen), there's a good chance they won't even be around by 2015.Civil War Horrorhttp://civilwarhorror.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8498840600741973651.post-84754452606174802562011-07-13T22:29:42.946-05:002011-07-13T22:29:42.946-05:00Great article, and very solid reasoning. In my mi...Great article, and very solid reasoning. In my mind, self-publishing seems better suited to fiction rather than non-fiction anyhow. When I browse books, I mrean really take the time to prowl the shelves, read sections of text and such, it is always while looking for non-fiction titles. I guess that's just the way I am, but they tend to cost more, there is a lot of art or maps that I want to see first hand, and in general I just enjoy browsing non-fiction.

But with paperback fiction, I'm much more inclined to take a chance and make an impulse e-book purchase. I also don't mind reading fiction in an e-format because such works typically don't have photos or maps or charts to worry about. It just feels more natural to read nothing but text.

Of course I say this having just read Rick Atkinson's An Army At Dawn, and I'm well into The Day of Battle, but I suppose those are just the exceptions that support the rule. I don't mind the occasional map, but since the maps look rather cruddy on the Kindle screen, I would prefer them in print. Still, much easier to read an eight hundred page war history on an eight ounce Kindle...

Back to the argument regarding your fiction books, your story sounds like so many others I've heard over the last year. Glacial turnaround times coupled with poor royalties, loss of a great deal of creative control, incompatibility with their current publishing schedule ("bad timing" indeed...) and this need for the publishing houses to find an "easy" way to market your book - casting a wide net they say - all spell doom for their future. Some will no doubt survive, but many weak calves will be culled from the herd.Jack Badelairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10932441028544500024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8498840600741973651.post-81358862734460124382011-07-13T09:42:20.441-05:002011-07-13T09:42:20.441-05:00Best of luck, Sean.Best of luck, Sean.Andrewhttp://cartesiantheatre.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8498840600741973651.post-73918133007879075702011-07-12T11:32:13.380-05:002011-07-12T11:32:13.380-05:00Congrats on taking the plunge with self-publishing...Congrats on taking the plunge with self-publishing.
